Lifespan of a Shade Sail

Shade Sails Installed

Ever wonder how long that sweet new stuff you buy will last? Shade Sails are no different!

Many customers (smartly!) ask about lifespan, but unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on several factors, just like with many things in life.

The biggest enemy of long-lasting sails? Slack!

Think about a tattered flag whipping in the wind – that’s what happens to loose sails. Keep an eye on tension and adjust your hardware to keep things taut. Remember, movement equals wear and tear.

Even with proper tension, pinpointing lifespan is tricky. Climate has a significant influence. Strong winds, storms, and snow aren’t exactly shade sail friends.

But fear not! With proper care and Installation, you can expect most sail fabrics to last at least 5-7 years. Think of it as a planning and budgeting guide, not a countdown to sail-swapping.

And hey, 5-7 years is just an estimate. Our sails are 8, 9, and 10 years old. They are still working well and providing shade. However, they also show their age with some wear, which adds character.

So, while those numbers are helpful, don’t panic if your sail hits year five and isn’t begging for retirement. Just keep an eye on things, and you’ll be ready when the time comes.

The Ultimate Guide to Selecting a Swing Set Canopy Tarp

Custom Swing Set Canopy Tarp

At, maintaining a backyard wooden play set goes beyond keeping the swings in motion and the slide slick. It’s about creating a safe and inviting haven for your children’s imaginations to run wild. While regular tasks like tightening bolts, sanding rough patches, and replacing worn components are essential, one often-overlooked element deserves special attention: the Swing Set Canopy. Not even a light rain will stop the fun. Think of the replacement swing set canopy as the crowning jewel of your playset kingdom. It’s a sun shield, a rain protector, and a cozy hideaway that transforms the play structure into a multi-dimensional wonderland. But just like any other outdoor feature, canopies need regular TLC to keep your little ones’ fort safe and sound.

Vinyl and Canvas Swing Set Tarps from are made of heavy marine grade vinyl with standard fasteners which are either brass grommets or stainless steel snaps. We offer stock sizes and custom made canopy tarp in any size needed. We can make heavy duty custom playset tarps for most of the popular manufacturers like Gorilla playsets and Rainbow Play Systems for any play area. This marine grade vinyl is a heavyweight 15oz. laminated material with UV protection and mildew retardant added. THE STRONGEST AND MOST DURABLE IN THE INDUSTRY! Is your existing playground tarp just an old canopy?

Why a Swing Set Canopy Tarp Matters

  • Sun Protection: Harsh sun rays can make playtime scorching, leading to sunburn and heat exhaustion. A sturdy swing set replacement canopy provides much-needed shade, allowing kids to enjoy their fort comfortably throughout the day.
  • Weatherproofing: Rain showers and sudden downpours can turn a fun playdate into a soggy mess. A well-maintained canopy keeps the fun dry, ensuring uninterrupted playtime even when the clouds gather.
  • Durability: Canopies are exposed to possible variants year-round, facing the brunt of sun, rain, wind, and even falling leaves. Regularly checking for rips, tears, and mildew growth helps prevent further damage and extends the lifespan of your canopy tarp.
  • Safety First: Damaged canopies pose safety hazards. Torn fabric can snag on clothing or pinch fingers, while weakened poles can buckle under pressure. Regular inspections and timely repairs ensure your playset canopy remains a sturdy protector, not a potential risk.

Choosing the Right Swing Set Canopy
Replacing a swing set canopy doesn’t have to be a guessing game. With a little preparation, you’ll be canopy experts in no time! Here’s what to consider:

  • Canopy Dimensions: Measure the length and width of your existing canopy in inches. Then, calculate the required square footage for the new one using the formula: length x width / 144. Knowing the square footage ensures a perfect fit.
  • Stock vs. Custom: Many playsets use standard-size canopies (38″ x 79″, 48″ x 86″, 58″ x 94″, or 86″ x 134″). These are readily available and affordable, but come in limited colors (usually blue or green). Custom canopies offer more size and color options, including two-color divides or stripes, but they’re non-returnable if measured incorrectly. Since they are custom made, there is no return of a non-defective item.
  • Material Matters: Our vinyl canopies are heavy-duty, resists mold and mildew, and withstands harsh weather. Choose marine-grade vinyl for superior strength. Canvas, like Sunbrella Replacement Swing Canopies, repels water, resists mold and mildew, creates a drier environment, and offers more UV protection from a light source than vinyl. It comes in more colors and doesn’t fade, but it’s pricier.
  • Fastener Frenzy: Note how your existing canopy is attached (snaps or grommets are common). The manufacturer should be able to provide a canopy with compatible fasteners, but be sure to measure the distance between each fastener on your playset structure for accurate spacing.

We recommend removing your playset tarp during winter months to protect it from harsh weather conditions.

Investing in Fun and Safety
Replacing a swing set canopy is an investment in your children’s fun and safety. By taking the time to choose the right one, you’ll create a backyard haven where memories are made and imaginations take flight, rain or shine. So grab your tape measure, browse the options, and get ready to canopy your way to playtime perfection!

Unveiling the Essence: 10 Compelling Reasons Inground Pool Owners Should Embrace Pool Safety Covers

Picture this: a serene backyard adorned with a sparkling inground pool, enticing and inviting on a warm day. While the allure of a pool is undeniable, the responsible inground pool owner knows that safety is paramount. In this article, we delve into the intricate world of safety pool covers, exploring the ten compelling reasons why they are indispensable for any conscientious inground pool enthusiast.

1. Water Conservation and Evaporation Control: In the realm of responsible water management, safety pool covers emerge as unsung heroes for inground pool owners. By acting as a formidable barrier, they significantly curtail water evaporation, ensuring that your inground pool retains its liquid allure without draining your water resources. In times when water conservation is imperative, this feature alone makes safety pool covers an environmentally conscientious choice.

2. Energy Efficiency and Temperature Regulation: Safety pool covers, with their insulating prowess, not only retain water but also serve as guardians of thermal equilibrium for inground pools. By reducing heat loss and preventing excessive cooling, these covers aid in maintaining an optimal water temperature compared to winter covers. This translates into energy savings, as your inground pool heating system can operate more efficiently, contributing to both environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

3. Debris Defense and Maintenance Simplification: Ever find yourself grappling with leaves, twigs, or unwelcome critters in your pristine inground pool waters? Solid Covers and Mesh Safety Covers stand as vigilant sentinels, thwarting the invasion of debris and detritus. This not only preserves the visual appeal of your inground oasis but also minimizes the frequency and complexity of inground pool maintenance, freeing up time for you to enjoy the pool rather than constantly tending to it.

4. Enhanced Safety for Children and Pets: The tranquility of an inground poolside setting should never compromise on safety, especially when it comes to children and pets. Swimming Pool Safety Cover, whether solid or mesh, designed with stainless steel springs and brass anchors, act as an impenetrable shield for inground pools no matter your pool shape. They provide peace of mind by preventing accidental falls and creating a protective barrier, reinforcing your inground pool as a haven for relaxation rather than a source of concern. Although MightyCovers does not sell them, Automatic Pool Covers are also available and most serve as a safety pool cover and will meet ASTM F certifications. Winter Pool Covers and Solar Covers are NOT safety pool covers and designed for your family’s safety.

5. UV Radiation Shield: Bask in the sun’s glory without fretting over the potential harm it may cause to your inground pool water. Safety pool covers, including solid and mesh variants, double as UV radiation shields, thwarting the detrimental effects of prolonged sun exposure. This not only preserves the color and quality of your inground pool water but also extends the lifespan of pool chemicals, a testament to the holistic protection these covers afford.

6. Chemical Conservation and Balance: Maintaining the chemical balance of your inground pool water is an intricate dance, and safety pool covers play a pivotal role in this performance. By shielding your inground pool from external elements, these covers, be they solid or mesh, curtail the need for excessive chemical treatments. This not only makes your inground pool a healthier environment for swimmers but also contributes to sustainability by reducing chemical usage and subsequent environmental impact.

7. Aesthetic Appeal and Design Integration: Beyond their functional aspects, Pool Safety Covers can be seamlessly integrated into your inground pool’s design, adding an element of aesthetic sophistication. Modern designs and customizable options allow these covers to blend harmoniously with your inground outdoor space, ensuring that safety does not compromise style.

8. Legal Compliance and Liability Mitigation: In many jurisdictions, inground pool safety regulations are stringent, and compliance is not just an option but a legal imperative. Investing in a custom safety pool cover ensures adherence to these regulations, mitigating the risk of legal complications and potential liabilities. It’s a proactive step toward responsible inground pool ownership that resonates both with legal requirements and ethical considerations.

9. Extended Lifespan of Pool Equipment: The corrosive effects of the elements can take a toll on your inground pool equipment. Safety pool covers, whether a solid safety cover or mesh pool covers, act as a shield against the ravages of weather, extending the lifespan of your inground pool’s mechanical components. This translates into long-term savings for inground pool owners, as you won’t find yourself replacing equipment prematurely due to exposure-related wear and tear.

10. Peace of Mind and Leisure Enjoyment: Perhaps the most intangible yet invaluable benefit of Pool Safety Covers, no matter the pool size, is the peace of mind they provide for inground pool owners. Knowing that your inground pool is secure, well-maintained, and compliant with safety standards allows you to truly relish the leisure moments by the water. It transforms your inground pool into a sanctuary, fostering relaxation and enjoyment without the nagging worry of potential hazards.

In the intricate tapestry of inground pool ownership, safety pool covers weave a story of prudence, sustainability, and enjoyment. These ten compelling reasons underscore their indispensability, offering a holistic approach to inground pool management that transcends mere functionality. As you contemplate the enhancement of your inground pool experience, consider the myriad benefits that a custom safety pool cover brings, elevating your aquatic haven to new heights of safety, efficiency, and style, all with the added perk of free shipping for inground pool owners. Shade Cloth or Shade Sails: All You Need to Know

What are Shade Sails?

Shade Sails Installed

Sun Sails are designed to connect to mounting points on homes, garages, posts, or other structures. Delta rings (d-rings) are in each corner that attach to the attachment points with mounting hardware. Mounting hardware can consist of turnbuckles, spring clips, cables or other hardware.

By design, Shade Sails have curves (gores) in the perimeter of all sides. The shade sail’s corners are adequately tightened to the connection points on structures, poles, trees, and various other objects..

This design with the curves (gores) in the perimeter of the sails is what tightens up the entire sail. When you pull the corners, you try to straighten out the curves, but you cannot. The perimeter is fastened to the fabric in the center of the shade sails. This tightens the fabric in the center of the shade sails, reducing sagging in the middle during high winds.

Shade Cloth on Pergola

What is Finished Shade Cloth?

Finished shade cloth is the same fabric that is used for shade sails but in custom sizes.. If you are wanting to place the shade cloth on top of a pergola or arbor, you can get shade cloth custom made with straight edges and no gores.

Brass Grommets may be placed in the corners and along the sides equally spaced. The finished shade cloth can be fastened to the top of the pergola by putting screws with washers through the grommets.

Another use is Finished Shade Cloth with Grommets placed closely together. Cables or ropes can be lashed through the close mounted grommets and around a frame or existing structures.

These are the main differences between shade sails and finished shade cloth. Other uses for each exist, but this gives you a starting point on trying to achieve the shade that you are looking for. Be sure to take into consideration the shade fabric types, solid (waterproof) or mesh. They can both give you shade, UV blockage and sun protection.

Shade sails made with a solid fabric like Sunbrella Marine Grade Fabric must be installed with about an 18 to 20 degree slope. This will reduce the chance of the outdoor shade filling up with rain and possibly causing damage to the shade sail and/or your property. Sun Sail Shades for Shade and UV Protection

After another hot summer, there was a real need for shade and UV protection. A great solution for both are Sun Sail Shades, and the designs make any outdoor area classy and fun. When it is so hot outside, it can be too uncomfortable to enjoy your outdoor living spaces.

Sun Sail Shades Installed Over a Patio Deck

Temperatures under a shade sail can actually be reduced by as much as 15%. Some of the health effects of overexposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays includes but are not limited to:

  • Skin cancer (melanoma and non-melanoma)
  • Premature aging of the skin and other skin problems
  • Cataracts and other eye damage
  • Immune system suppression

Depending on the fabrics used to make shade sails, up to 98% of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be blocked. This can definitely reduce some of the harmful effects from overexposure from the sun.

What are the differences between Mesh and Solid fabric shade sails?

What your actual needs are for installing a shade sail, will help you decide if you want a mesh shade sail or a solid fabric shade sail. Do you need just shade and ultraviolet (UV) protection from the sun?

Then install a mesh shade sail. A mesh shade sail can give you the desired shade to reduce the temperature of a hot day. Like a solid fabric shade sail it can also block up to 98% of the ultraviolet (UV) rays. Mesh shade sails can also be installed completely flat with no slope.

If you desire that look, you can add slope to their design. However, they are mesh and are not water proof. If it rains, instead of draining off or puddling on the shade sail, the rain will come through them. Mesh shade sails can also cost up to 35% less than the solid shade sails do.

The solid fabric shade sails like the ones made with marine grade Sunbrella fabrics, can also offer the same shade and UV blockage that is offered with mesh shade sails. An additional advantage of a solid fabric shade sails, is that they’re water proof , so you can also enjoy them while it is raining.

When installed there must at least an 18 to 20 degree slope incorporated, to make sure that it would not fill up full of water and possibly do damage to the shade sail and your property. Sometimes whether or not you can achieve the proper amount of slope can dictate if you can use a solid shade sail or a mesh one.

So if you are looking for an inexpensive solution for your shade and UV protection needs, consider shade sails. They perform well, look good and are a great addition to any outdoor area.

Knowing your Swimming Pool Covers – Three Types to Know

Swimming pool owners have a lot of fun in their pools, but also have a bit of responsibility to contend with as well. The simple fact is that once you own a pool you’ll quickly have to learn all about pH levels, pool chemicals, skimming, pump and filter maintenance, pool vacuums, and more. One area that you’ll also have to quickly learn about is that of Swimming Pool Covers

Safety Pool Cover to Prevent Drowning

There are a few different types of pool covers and while it’s a relatively easy subject to understand it is still a good idea to learn the differences each type of cover has. Each one has strengths and weaknesses, and each one accomplishes different things.

The first is just a Winter pool cover. A winter swimming pool cover fits over your pool and works to protect it in a few ways. It will stop leaves and other debris from falling into the pool, which is the primary benefit of one of these covers. But along with that, it can reduce the amount of sunlight entering a pool’s waters which will reduce the chemicals needed for maintenance over the fall and winter.

It can also reduce animal related issues by eliminating the opportunity for animals to drink from the pool. The pool cover stretches over the swimming pool and is held in place by weighted bags along the perimeter of the pool. The main drawback of a winter swimming pool cover is safety – it won’t stop a child or pet from falling into the pool.

Safety Pool Covers are just what they sound like. They take the winter pool cover to another level and provide safety for your family. These pool covers fit over the pool like a basic winter cover would, but they feature straps that cross over the cover and attach to anchor points installed around the perimeter of the pool.

These anchor points and straps give the cover the added strength it needs to prevent accidental drowning. Safety pool covers provide all the protection from leaves and debris that a standard cover does, only with the added element of safety. There are only two disadvantages to these covers.

The first is that they’re a bit more expensive than a standard cover due to their higher quality and extra components. The second is that they’re a little more complex to install. The straps must be connected adjusted properly, and it’s usually a little easier to install with two or three people.

Finally, there are Solar Pool Covers. These provide an entirely different type of service to a swimming pool owner. They don’t block the sun, don’t protect against falling debris, and won’t stop accidental drowning from occurring. What they’re used for, however, is warming up your water.

Clear Solar Cover for Swimming Pools

They can speed up the process of opening up your pool and can extend the summer swimming season well into fall. Solar covers, sometimes called solar blankets, can actually increase water temperatures by as much as fifteen degrees. They’re relatively inexpensive as well. The disadvantage here is obvious, and it’s that beyond warming the water they don’t really help with anything else.

There are a couple of other accessories worth knowing about as well. The first is a Pool Cover ‘Pillow’. These inflate with air and go underneath the pool cover. They’re not designed to help shed water, but instead actually reduce damage done to your pool walls during a hard freeze. They’re effective in an in ground pool as well as in an above ground pool, and well worth adding to your shut-down routine. The other accessory is a Leaf Net. This net is basically another type of cover that lies on top of your primary cover. Once the fall leaves have completely left the trees.

If you’re considering a RV cover, that’s definitely a good way to go. Not only will it give you better protection, but you can make sure that it looks exactly as you want and has the perfect finish, no matter what you have in mind.
