Why do Shade Sails have Curves in the sides? The perimeter of each sail is designed with a curve (also referred to as a gore) inwards towards the center of the sail to control the fabric tension. Shade Sails have reinforced webbing around the perimeter and marine stainless steel d-rings or “Delta” rings at each corner. Years ago, people would hang up a tarp with straight sides and grommets in the corners over what they wanted to protect or to shade an area. The grommets in the corners of the tarp were attached and tensioned to the mounting points. The outside edges of the tarp would be tensioned tight, however the middle of the tarp would sag and flap in the wind. So curves were put in the edges of the perimeter and once the corners were pulled, that would attempt to straighten out the curves in the sides, but they could not because they were attached to the fabric in the center of the shade sail. This effect would in turn tighten up the fabric in the center of the shade sail. This eliminates the sagging or loose fabric like in the middle of the tarp with the grommets. When properly tensioned, the fabric will not wrinkle, sag, or flap in the wind. |
When properly tensioned, the fabric will not wrinkle, sag, or flap in the wind. When you supply us with the mounting point measurements, the shade sails are designed with a reduction of approximately 10 percent of your attachment point measurements (see example on right). This is done to allow enough space for the mounting hardware and to tension the sail. All final measurements will be approximate due to tolerances during the fabricating process.

Shade sails are a great way to add shade and style to your outdoor space, but how long will they last? The answer depends on several factors, but with proper care, you can expect yours to last for many years.
Material Matters:
High-quality fabrics, like HDPE or commercial-grade materials, are more durable and can last 5 to 15 years, or even longer with good maintenance. Check the warranty for your specific fabric.
UV-resistant materials are key, as constant sun exposure weakens the fabric. Cheaper materials without UV protection will deteriorate faster.
Weathering the Elements:
High winds and harsh weather put stress on your shade sail. Proper installation with good tensioning helps it withstand these conditions.
Installation Makes a Difference:
Proper installation ensures even tautness across the fabric, reducing stress on the material and anchor points. This minimizes sagging and wind damage.
Using Your Shade Sail Wisely:
Avoid hanging heavy objects or putting excessive strain on the fabric.
Promptly remove dirt and debris to prevent damage.
Consider taking the sail down during extreme weather conditions if possible.
Maximizing Lifespan:
Choose a high-quality shade sail.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation, maintenance, and cleaning.
Conduct regular inspections to identify and address any potential issues early.
By following these tips, you can ensure your shade sail provides years of enjoyment and protection from the sun.

We are excited to have placed our order today and look forward to years of shade on our deck. Great website and really easy to look at all of the options. I also had a question this morning and needed to call your office for clarification. I do not recall the young lady that answered the phone, but she was very professional and answered my question quickly. How wonderful to speak to someone in person that is pleasant, professional and knowledgeable.

I ordered five large triangular shade sails, mounting hardware, and specified the Commercial 95 fabric. Each shade sail was irregular with slightly different measurements since my outdoor area has mounts in odd locations. I shopped around and found Mighty Covers’ prices to be very competitive. Because I saw good reviews for them (and frequent negative reviews with some of the other companies), I placed my order with them.
I scanned and emailed a diagram with my exact point-to-point measurements to Larry and he promptly sent an order confirmation with all the specifics. I reviewed and signed the order and emailed back to him.
The sails and hardware arrived in three shipments and I found them to be very well made, particularly the corner mounts and the edges. This allayed my fears that they would not hold up well over time.
The installation went quickly and they look terrific. After initial installation, I allowed the material to relax under full sun and medium tension and then tightened the turnbuckles on two subsequent days. The material is now tight and perfect.
One note on the hardware: I’ve not checked Home Depot but the turnbuckles I got from Mighty Covers is superior to the aluminum-bodied ones available at Lowes. Those can loosen with the daily wind vibration of the fabric and can come apart.
A final note on customer service: There was an issue with the fabric color on two of the sails that Larry quickly resolved for me. I find it rare these days to get such fast and courteous customer service. Mighty Covers is a top-notch company and I will definitely use them again.

We love our shade sail. It keeps the hot Florida sun off our cars and eastern side of the house, as well as filtering out oak leaves that used to fall on the vehicles. Great support from staff at the company, too. Always picked up the phone when I had a question.

I would like to offer a testimonial regarding your fine shade sails. We have had ours up for about 6 years in the Colorado sun, snow and wind. We regularly see 40+ mph gust at our hillside lot (actually over 50mph this last week). These shades sails have performed flawlessly and still look like new.
