Sandbox Cover Example – Suppose you have a 60″ x 72″ sandbox (measured outside edge to outside edge) with 4 x 4 posts in each corner, and you want the cover to drop down the outside of the sandbox wall by 3 inches: The finished cover will be 66″ x 78″ with 8-1/2″ square cutouts on each corner. The 8-1/2″ cutout is enough to accommodate the 3″ drop, 1-1/2″ for the sandbox wall which is usually made of a 2 x 4 piece of wood (we will need to know the width of the frame boards) and 4″ for the post. We know that a 4″ x 4″ post is actually 3.5″ x 3.5″, but the extra 1/2″ gives you a little wiggle room.
